Her name derives from the Shona name Tendai (meaning 'to give thanks). Both of her parents were working as teachers at the time of her birth. Her father, Kazembe Ajamu Coleman, is a black American with Nigerian ancestry. Her mother, Claire Stoermer, has German and Scottish ancestry.
